Donor Registration Is
“Pre-Planning”66% of Texans 18 and over, have made donation a part of their advanced end-of-life plan. So that funeral professionals may know what to expect from United Tissue Resources as we honor their decisions and those of donor families, we have provided the following information. These steps explain our process for the surgical recovery of tissue, and the information needed from funeral professionals to complete each step.

Step 1: UTR Is Notified of a Death
Please allow time for UTR to speak with the next of kin, before proceeding with embalming. In addition to gathering information used in determining eligibility for donation, we will explain the benefits of donation for potential recipients. We will also ask about the family’s plan for funeral services and coordinate the recovery of tissue around those arrangements. Care is given to making sure that recovery of tissue does not conflict with the presentation that a family chooses for their loved one.

What we ask of funeral homes
We encourage you to make use of our 24-hour contact line (800-489-8027). We will coordinate tissue recovery with consideration given to details such as reconstruction, funeral attire, and the processes of funeral professionals. We will also keep you informed on issues of transport, to and from our dedicated recovery sites in the Austin area.

Step 2: The Recovery of Tissue
An open-casket funeral is possible even after the recovery of organs, corneas, and tissue. UTR must remain in contact with donor families and funeral professionals to make this possible.

Step 3: Post-recovery
UTR will arrange for the transport of bodies at no cost to the families in our care.
