You may request copies online, by mail, or in person at the office of vital records for the county in which the death occurred\u00a0<span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #33cccc;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dshs.texas.gov\/vs\/reqproc\/deathcert.shtm?hsCtaTracking=b25c4362-ad15-450a-80e4-4d30c4ac5951%7Ce964e3ef-9b6e-4111-bcfd-72b1aa6340d2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">If you have family members in Mexico<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Temporary passports may be available for your family members. The\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><a style=\"color: #33cccc;\" href=\"https:\/\/consulmex.sre.gob.mx\/austin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mexican Consulate<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0may provide more information.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">If your loved one was a victim of crime<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Crime Victims\u2019Compensation Program is administered by the Office of the Attorney General and is dedicated to ensuring that victims of violent crime are provided financial assistance for crime-related expenses that cannot be reimbursed by insurance or other sources. Texas courts collect court costs from convicted offenders for the Crime Victims&#8217; Compensation Fund. If you\u00a0or a loved one were a victim of violent crime, you may be eligible for benefits. Find more information about applying\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasattorneygeneral.gov\/cvs\/crime-victims-compensation-how-to-apply\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">here<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Contact an attorney about probate<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The attorney will need to have the original will if there is one and a certified death certificate in order to begin. The attorney will eventually need a list of all assets and important paperwork belonging to your loved one, including real estate deeds and titles, stock certificates, loan paperwork, bank and retirement account statements, credit report, marriage and birth certificates of surviving spouse and\/or children, and the last 4 years of tax returns. If there is no will, the attorney can assist you with filing to determine heirship and how the estate should be distributed. The State Bar of Texas provides a\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><a style=\"color: #33cccc;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texasbar.com\/AM\/Template.cfm?Section=Lawyer_Referral_Service_LRIS_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lawyer Referral &amp; Information Service<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0at 800-252-9690 and online.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">File claims with life insurance companies<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You will need to provide the policy numbers and a death certificate. If your loved one was listed as a beneficiary on a policy, arrange to have the name removed.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Contact your loved one\u2019s employer<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Inquire about any 401(k), pension, or company benefits that they may be entitled to.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Notify local Social Security office<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If the funeral home director has not notified Social Security of the death, contact 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. If your loved one was receiving benefits, they must be discontinued because overpayments will require complicated repayment. If they have a surviving spouse or dependents, ask about eligibility for increased personal benefits and about a one-time payment of $225. More information about applying for Survivors\u2019 Benefits can be found\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><a style=\"color: #33cccc;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/pubs\/EN-05-10084.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Advise all creditors in writing that a death has occurred<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Tell them that they will need to wait until an administrator or executor of the estate is appointed, and do not agree to anything or sign anything with the creditor until you have<br \/>\ndiscussed it with an attorney.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Other financial institutions and government agencies to notify<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The post office, all 3 credit reporting agencies, the registrar of voters, the Department of Motor Vehicles, and the VA if your loved one was a veteran.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Cancel or transfer accounts, memberships, and subscriptions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This may include services such as newspaper delivery or utilities, as well as medical prescriptions, membership in unions or organizations, updating beneficiaries in your will and\/or life insurance policies, and removal from marketing and mailing lists.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sabemos que puede resultar abrumador organizar las distintas responsabilidades que requieren atenci\u00f3n durante el per\u00edodo de duelo por la p\u00e9rdida de un ser querido.
